Transformation of the textile industry: main conclusions of the STEP2030 webinar

At the end of September, EURATEX (European Apparel and Textile Confederation) organized a STEP2030 webinar titled “How to promote sustainability through innovation in the textile ecosystem?”

This event brought together more than 286 participants from 22 countries, which demonstrates a great interest in the sustainable development of the textile and fashion industry, as well as a desire to reduce their negative impact on the environment.

The webinar featured representatives from the industry, experts, and innovators who discussed key issues related to innovation in the textile industry, the need for further innovations, and strategies to ensure sustainability and circularity in the textile ecosystem. Among the guests at the STEP2030 webinar was Andriy Ilchenko, the CEO of “K.TEX.”

The European Commission and EU member states have taken the lead in creating infrastructure and technological capabilities for waste processing and developing new standards for the industry.  EU’s plans for sustainable management of textile waste are already influencing the industry in Europe and worldwide.

Sixteen speakers took part in the webinar, sharing their expertise in the textile industry. One example was innovations in fiber production presented by Kelheim Fibres and the Smart Stitch™ & Smart Disassembly™ technologies by Resortecs.

Significant attention was given to funding the transformation of the industry, which requires 5 to 8 billion euros over the next five years. Representatives from HUGO BOSS and the start-up VIVIDYE shared their approaches and challenges.

A separate panel focused on the digital transformation of the industry, aimed at improving supply chain transparency and fostering collaboration among market participants on a single platform.

The textile industry encompasses not only clothing and footwear but also technical and hygiene textiles produced from various fibres. There was an important discussion about the challenges of processing materials with enhanced properties, such as strength, flame resistance, and composite materials, as well as the application of circular economy principles.

For Ukraine, participating in such discussions is of paramount importance, as the EU market is its largest trading partner. The European Union’s initiatives in sustainable textile production have a significant impact on the global textile industry. Therefore, Ukraine should prepare for the changes and opportunities they bring.

I urge Ukrainian businesses and government to join the initiatives in the textile industry. It is up to us to reduce the negative impact of the textile industry on the environment and create a competitive textile ecosystem in Ukraine. We must actively work on the European standards introduction and establishing a state grant system for textile processing companies. Our country has the potential to become a key player in this industry, and it is within our reach.,” summarized Andriy Ilchenko.
